What are the causes of Toe pain?

Some people think that only athletes suffer from turf toe, and others think that only athletes that play a sport on Astroturf, or artificial turf, suffer from the condition. However, athletes are not the only people who get turf toe, and turf toe symptoms are not always directly related to Astroturf.
Surprisingly, turf toe is a relatively common injury, and it was the abundance of artificial turf that started to bring this type of injury to light in the public, leading to its nickname of turf toe. In fact, although most sports fields are not made with Astroturf anymore, athletes are still known to be diagnosed with the condition.
What Is Turf Toe?
Those diagnosed with turf toe are actually suffering from a sprain or stress fracture in their big toe. This is usually caused by repetitive motion in athletes in which they are required to gain speed quickly. This rapid increase in speed from a nonmoving position often causes the big toe to over extend, straining or tearing the connective tissue in the foot.
Turf toe symptoms can cause a range of complaints dependent upon the degree of an individual’s injury. In most cases, medical treatment will also depend on the degree of injury. Typically, a doctor will investigate turf toe symptoms by asking specific questions about the patient’s foot pain.
Typical Turf Toe Symptoms
A doctor will use the patient’s answers to questions about foot pain to diagnose the tier, or grade, of their injury.
Turf toe symptoms within the first tier, or grade I, are usually mild in terms of the pain experienced. In this type of injury, ligaments in the foot are only stretched and not torn, causing a feeling of tenderness in the big toe in and around the ball of the foot. In terms of mobility, patients will experience only a minor decrease in their ability to move their toe and foot, and a recovery period of just a couple of weeks is usually required to allow the injury to heal.
Symptoms within the second tier, or grade II, are more severe, and patients with these injuries have most likely torn the ligaments in their foot connected to their big toe. This causes much more pain in the foot and a greater degree of mobility loss. Additionally, the big toe and the areas of the foot that surround it usually become quite inflamed, and bruising typically occurs as well. Recovery for second-tier turf toe injuries requires rest for up to six weeks.
The third tier of turf toe injuries, or grade III, occurs when the patient has completely torn ligaments in their foot. When the condition has progressed to this point, the level of pain experienced can be extremely severe, and patients may find it difficult to move at all or place any weight whatsoever on their foot. In fact, the torn ligaments can actually cause the joint of the big toe to dislocate and can lead to very painful swelling and bruising in the foot. When this level of turf toe is diagnosed, patients should expect a recovery time as lengthy as three months.
How to Avoid Turf Toe
Unfortunately, many athletes will suffer from a diagnosis of turf toe more than one time. Similarly to an individual who has sprained their ankle and then suffers from a reoccurrence of the same sprain, individuals with turf toe have likely weakened the ligaments in their foot and may also suffer from repeat injuries.
To avoid turf toe, individuals should pay attention to the slightest turf toe symptoms and take action right away to avoid a worsening of the condition. Often, just being mindful of contributing factors like improper shoes or surfaces can make a huge difference in those that have never experienced turf toe before. Others who have dealt with the injury in the past may find that using athletic tape to stabilize the toe can help them avoid reinjuring it.
